Lycée CHANZY is a French High School located in Charleville-Mézières, the largest town in the Ardennes in the north-east of France, near the Belgian border, in the Champagne-Ardenne region.

This school has existed since 1876 and its name is a tribute to Alfred Chanzy who was a French general born in the Ardennes.

Chanzy high school is composed of about 700 students with 8 classes of “Secondes” (10th Grade, sophomore year), 8 classes of “Premières” (11th Grade, junior year) and 7 classes of “Terminales” (12th Grade, senior year).

General studies in our high school.

When the students are in “Secondes”, they have to choose a first option between either “SES” (social and economic studies) or “PFEG” (basics in economics) as well as a second option among the different languages or specific school options.

At the end of the “Seconde”, the students have to choose between three possibilities, which are a Literature Class (L), an Economic and Social Class (ES) or a Scientific Class (S) for their two final years and getting ready for their final examination, which is a national exam called the “Baccalauréat Général”.

Subjects

Our high school differentiates itself from the other schools as it offers a wide range of options and languages, apart from the traditional subjects, such as maths, physics, history, sport, French, geography…

The Drama class is for students who want to do art studies. Lycée Chanzy is the only school in the Ardennes where you can find this option.

The Art option consists in real art teaching and practice for keen students.

The Athletic class was created to reconcile studies and athletics.

The Sport option offers several kinds of sports for 4 to 5 hours a week.

The Greek and Latin options are made for students who are more interested in classics.

The European class offers more teaching in English; parts of the History and Geography curriculum are taught in the English language.

School organisation

A traditional schoolday starts at 8:00 and finishes at 18:00. The students have a morning break from 9:50 to 10:05, a one-or-two-hour lunchbreak during which most of the students have their meal at the canteen, and an afternoon break from 15:45 to 16:00.

Though, we may have free periods during the day.

We go to school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesday mornings, Thursdays and Fridays.

In Chanzy there are also clubs you can join …

With the photo club you can learn about photography techniques, share your ideas and pictures,

With the astronomy club you can use professional equipment to explore the universe,

With the cinema club, you can get half-price tickets and watch famous films with other cinema enthusiasts…

But Chanzy High School is not only this. It is a committed and united school as well, as shown by its two projects with the UNICEF organization, its Comenius projects with different school partners over Europe, a school exchange with a German school, school trips over Europe…
